How to Use Google Optimize
Google Optimize has two significant elements: (1) the editor and (2) the reporting suite. They’re used together in setting up and analyzing experiments to find out what works best for your website.
Start With the Editor
The editor allows you to create modified versions of a web page and test the various HTML content options against each other. For instance, in the first version, your web page can display the copy “Welcome to our website” versus “We help customers like you get what they need.” The editor works with an array of device-type views, including smartphones.
Review the Reporting Suite
The reporting suite uses data from your linked Google Analytics account to give more insight into the experiments you’ve set up using the editor. The editor will see whether the first version or the second version got the best click-through rate.
How to Set up an A/B Test With Google Optimize
Below is a step-by-step guide on how to run A/B tests with Google Optimize.
- Ensure that your site is connected to both Google optimize and Google Analytics.
- Create an A/B test. In your Google optimize account pick the element on which you would like to conduct the A/B test. One example for testing is a web page headline.
- Click the “Create experiment” button. You will then have to name the experiment. Enter the URL of where you would like to carry out the test and select the experiment type.
- Select the A/B experiment if you want to create a simple test variant using the optimized visual editor.
- Click on “Create variant” and write the variant’s name on the window pop-up, then click “Add.”
- Once you create the variant name, click on “Variant 1” to make modifications. Doing so will redirect you to your landing page. You can make any changes using the visual editor. Right-click on the headline and pick the “Edit text” option.
- Change the text, save the editor, click on “Done,” and go back to your optimized account.
- Scroll down the page to the objectives tab. Click on “Add experiment objective.” Ensure that your account is connected to your Google Analytics goal. The goal should be tracking conversions. You can log into your Google Analytics and create the goal if you haven’t already.
- Specify your test description and hypothesis, then click on the “Targeting” tab. Specify how many people visiting your site should be included in the test.
- Click on “Start experiment.” A modal pop-up will appear. Click “Start.” Let the experiment run for at least two weeks before you view the results. Google will let you know the winner after collecting sufficient data.
